Image Source: IANS News Chandigarh, May 20 : A day after the Punjab government notified black fungus as a disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday directed the Health Department to ensure that the necessary medicines for treating it are made available to all the government hospitals, including in the rural areas. He also asked the Department to depute doctors at the Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in the villages to ensure early detection and treatment of black fungus, which has been reported from many states, in the rural areas.

Chairing a meeting to review the COVID-19 situation in Bidar on Wednesday, Mr. Revoor said that the KKRDB will release funds for purchasing two oxygen containers one for Bidar, Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts and the other for Raichur, Ballari and Koppal districts. The tender process has been initiated and 50% of the amount for purchasing oxygen containers has been released to the saving accounts of the Deputy Commissioners office, Mr. Revoor said.

A PHC frequently consists of two or three rooms, with minimal medical equipment. They are not equipped with ventilators or oxygen facilities. The PHCs face problems of absenteeism among staff, shortage of medicines and long waits for patients. In addition, villagers have to walk two to five kilometres to reach a PHC. How can a patient, afflicted with COVID-19, walk to a PHC?
