LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT) - At the request of Gov. Asa Hutchinson, the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services will end the state’s participation in the federal unemployment assistance after June 26.
Hutchinson hopes the lowering of unemployment benefits will encourage people to return to work.
However, several people said Monday that the money helps, including James Bauldwin, who said he doesn’t feel safe returning to work, having worked in an assisted living facility.
The latest unemployment numbers for the area show 9 of the twelve counties in the KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot listening area saw increases during the month of February.
The Arkansas Division of Workforce Services numbers show Baxter County is tied for the 23rd lowest rate in the state, out of 75 counties, at 5.1%. That number is up slightly from 4.8% in January. Baxter County has a workforce of 16,496 with 844 reported as unemployed.
Marion County’s rate is 6.3%, up from 6% in January, which ranks 52nd in the state. Marion County’s labor force is 6,032 with 381 people out of work.
Fulton County is tied for 34th in the state with an unemployment rate of 5.5%, up from 5.1% in January. Fulton County has 269 unemployed out of a workforce of 4,870.

Arkansas Workforce Services has announced the availability of additional unemployment benefits for certain categories of people with self-employment income. This was established by Congress back in late December.
