BENTONVILLE, Ark. An investigation has been opened against Benton County Circuit Judge Brad Karren following a confrontation with a former lawmaker over a parking spot.
A video posted to Twitter shows Karren throwing his cane to the ground as he confronts former Arkansas Speaker of the House Davy Carter.
Carter said it all started over his son parking in a government-owned parking lot next to the 21c in Bentonville at around 7:00 p.m. Saturday. Carter claims in a tweet that his son parked in the lot outside of the restricted hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Gov. Asa Hutchinson signed Tuesday (March 9) a bill that prohibits abortions except in cases involving the health of the mother. The pro-life measure does not have an allowance for abortions in the case of rape or incest.
The bill, SB 6 (now Act 309), sailed through the supermajority Republican state Legislature. With 78 Republicans in the House and 27 in the Senate, the bill met little resistance in either chamber.
Though litigation is expected over the law, without court intervention it would go into effect in Arkansas on Aug. 3, 2021.
Hutchinson had voiced concerns about the measure due to the lack of a provision for rape or incest. In signing the bill, he acknowledged that concern, but it did not stop him from making the bill state law.
The field is set for proposed constitutional amendments that may be referred by the 93rd General Assembly for the 2022 general election. The state legislature can refer up to three proposed amendments for voter consideration every regular session.Talk Business and Politics reports the 43 amendment proposals range from restricting a proposed casino in Pope County to tort reform to recall elections and even the state legislature calling itself into a special session.
Some of the resolutions for consideration have details of their title, while others are “shell bills.” The “shell bills” will likely be amended to provide more details of their intentions.
