SpaceX will build the commercial human lander for NASA s historic Artemis program.
The Orion spacecraft will carry four astronauts into lunar orbit, where two crew members will transfer to SpaceX s human landing system (HLS) for the final leg of their journey to the Moon. After a week of exploring the rocky surface, the pair will board the lander and ravel to Orion and their colleagues for a return trip to Earth.
NASA s lunar exploration program, authorized in 2017, will land the first woman and next man on the Moon in 2024, and help establish a sustainable human lunar presence by the end of the decade. Artemis missions are expected to begin this year with NASA s commercial partners.
