It s one surgery down and one to go for the 36-year-old driver who was badly beaten Thursday during a carjacking at a luxury automobile dealership in Des Plaines.

When Interra Capital Group bought a single-story office building in Arlington Heights in 2015, the new owners decided to keep the building s oldest fixture. Phil came with the building, said human relations manager Karma Shipman, her voice bubbly with excitement about Wednesday s surprise 90th birthday party in the building for longtime building engineer Phil Pecoraro. Everybody loves him. He s a gem we have.
As he has for the past 28 years, Pecoraro, who drives from his home in Elk Grove Village, showed up early on his birthday for his shift at 2101 S. Arlington Heights Road. Phil has been here through every owner. He knows everything about this building, said attorney Ronald F. Wittmeyer Jr., who has an office in the building. Whether it s part of his job or not, he ll do it.

In Megan O Neill s English classes at Saint Viator High School, students are just as likely to study classics like The Scarlet Letter as they are Amanda Gorman s The Hill We Climb.
It s where she weaves in the past with the present, and no daily lesson plan is ever the same.
I think there s always lessons that can be learned from these classics, as long as you re keeping current events in mind, said O Neill, who started a Literary Heroines course at the Arlington Heights Catholic high school in the fall. If you just keep those books in the 1920s or 1600s, I don t think students are going to get as much out of it. But if you re bringing those events from those historical time periods and the values of those time periods, and comparing and contrasting them to present day and what students are actually going through today, that s what brings more merit.

Long expected by racing industry observers and feared by horse owners, trainers and fans, Arlington International Racecourse s status as a gem for the sport of kings is about to come to the finish line.
Churchill Downs Inc., owner of the storied Arlington Heights track where horses have raced since 1927, announced Tuesday it plans to put the 326 acres near Euclid Avenue and Wilke Road up for sale. Churchill will use Chicago-based real estate firm CBRE to market the redevelopment opportunity, officials announced in a Tuesday afternoon news release.
And after previously casting doubt on whether a 2021 race meet would be held, Churchill officials on Tuesday said they re committed to running Arlington s 68 live race dates, scheduled from April 30 to Sept. 25.
