Energy Australia Announces Early Closure of Victoria’s Largest Coal-Fired Power Plant
Energy Australia announced on March 10 that it will close Victoria’s largest power station in mid-2028 four years earlier than scheduled.
The move has raised concerns from the federal government over electricity prices and reliability in the national power grid.
In a statement, Energy Australia Managing Director, Catherine Tanna, said the company approached the Victorian Government with the plan to retire the Yallourn power station, and to transition to cleaner energy.
“While the announcement may have surprised some of our people, its context didn’t,” Tanna told reporters. “We are acutely aware that the world of energy is rapidly changing as we transition to cleaner forms.”

The most advanced attempt to export zero-emissions hydrogen from Australia to Asia has begun production in Victoriaâs Latrobe Valley, boosting hopes that some jobs lost from the closure of coal-fired power plants may be recovered in the transition to clean energy.
Two days after it was announced the Yallourn power plant would close down in 2028, four years earlier than planned, a Japanese-Australian consortium has begun converting brown coal into liquid hydrogen as part of a $500 million pilot project at AGLâs nearby Loy Yang A power plant.
Yallourn power station Australia’s oldest, dirtiest coal plant will close four years ahead of schedule in 2028. Announcing the move this week, operator Energy Australia said it will build a giant energy storage battery on the site to make room for more renewables. This is a powerful statement about where our energy system is heading.
Yallourn has operated for 47 years burning brown coal. It supplies one-fifth of Victoria’s energy and employs 500 permanent workers and hundreds more contractors. It’s also responsible for 13% of Victoria’s emissions.
In response to the announcement, federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor said:
Our thoughts are with the workers, their families and local business owners who rely on the power station for their livelihoods.
