If there’s one thing to celebrate locally during the post-vaccine era, it’s the return of popular music festivals.
Some of the Bay Area’s biggest events such as BottleRock (Sept. 3-5), Second Sky Fest (Sept. 18-19), Lights On festival (Sept. 19-19) and Outside Lands (Oct. 29-31) are already sold out this year, though a little magic, and deep pockets, could still score you a resale ticket.
The Santa Clarita City Council will consider a request by the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society on Tuesday to provide $125,000 toward seismic retrofitting for four historic buildings in Heritage Junction Historical Park in Newhall.
Alan Pollack, president of the Historical Society, sent the request for the emergency funding in a letter addressed to the City Council members April 19.
“These restored buildings are sited on foundations that have begun to deteriorate and sustain damage, including termite damage, and there is ongoing maintenance and additional reinforcement that these 100- to 150-year-old buildings need to withstand the stresses of seismic activity, the constant shaking caused by passing trains, and wear and tear from public tours and festivals,” Pollack wrote of the Saugus Train Station, Kingsbury House, Newhall Ranch House and Edison House. “Without these upgrades, the four buildings could pose a safety risk to our volunteers and the visiting public.”

File photo: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers detain a man suspected of being in the country illegally.
The New Jersey Legislature on Thursday began considering whether to bar counties and private companies from entering into new contracts to house undocumented immigrants detained by federal officials.
Advocates of a ban say that not only do these detentions rip families apart, but also, the conditions in some of the facilities are deplorable and inhumane. Further, the availability of beds in these facilities encourages U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to be more aggressive in picking up and holding people for no reason other than they lack the legal status to be in the country.
