Alderney Wildlife Trust s bird cams are up and running for the breeding season.
Puffin cams have been placed on Burhou Island and, for the first time, there are cameras watching the breeding Gannets on Les Etacs.
There are approximately 100 breeding pairs of Puffin off Alderney, making it the biggest colony of Atlantic Puffin in the Channel Islands.
In addition, there are 6,000 pairs of gannet courting, breeding and feeding off the island.
The first one went out in 2009, but it has changed and expanded since. The puffin cams record activity throughout the breeding season. We use that for monitoring the health of the population. We have to bounce the signal from the south coast off Burhou onto Alderney and into someone s garage and then up online and hopefully we ll get another 700,000 people viewing the webcams this year.

It is hoped that free travel from outside the Bailiwick might resume on 1 July, but this is dependent on Covid-19 case numbers in other jurisdictions, vaccination rates and whether new variants emerge.
Alderney Week team leader Ronnie Cairnduff said the team would be working closely with the authorities to comply with all current restrictions and regulations.
‘Regrettably, at this stage, this means only residents within the Bailiwick bubble will be able to join us and we very much look forward to welcoming them to this 73rd Alderney Week,’ he said.

Guernsey scientist Dr Miranda Bane will represent the Bailiwick at an international conservation conference in March 2021.
The forum exists to promote the conservation of diverse and increasingly threatened plant and animal species and natural habitats.
It provides expertise, information and practical help to the various jurisdictions in the UK and in the Territories.
We will talk about the challenges and solutions to island conservation. We are lucky that we do not have to cope with natural disasters like erupting volcanoes and hurricanes with other island are faced with. One of Guernsey s great challenges is a lack of understanding of what is happening to pollinators. I ll be presenting some of our work that has helped us address this issue.
