ALERT bust nets drugs, cash and vehicles; five suspects facing charges

Ten firearms and nearly a quarter million dollars’ worth of drugs, cash, and vehicles have been seized following a series of search warrants in Lethbridge. Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams raided five homes and arrested five suspected drug dealers.
ALERT Lethbridge’s organized crime team concluded a lengthy drug trafficking investigation by searching five Lethbridge homes on January 21, 2021. Lethbridge Police Service helped with the searches and arrests.
“Organized crime harms our communities, and drug trafficking breeds violence, addiction, and ancillary crimes. This investigation is further testament to ALERT’s success in working alongside our partner agencies to disrupt and dismantle organized crime,” said ALERT CEO Supt. Dwayne Lakusta in a press release.
36 milliliters of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB); 826 tabs of LSD; $159,000 cash. The seized firearms which included a prohibted handgun, two shotguns, and seven rifles will be subject of forensic analysis. The cash and vehicles will be sent to the provincial civil forfeiture office for review. Police allege the suspects were part of a group supplying drugs throughout Lethbridge and the surrounding area. “Organized crime harms our communities, and drug trafficking breeds violence, addiction, and ancillary crimes, said ALERT CEO Supt. Wood Buffalo RCMP have charged a 29-year-old Fort McMurray man with drug-related offences after discovering crack cocaine and cash inside a downtown home.
The investigation began earlier this month when Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) received a tip about drug activity in the area.

On Jan. 22, police searched the home and found 133 grams of crack cocaine and $30,000 in cash.
Yimag Abdi-Ahmed was arrested and charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, production of a controlled substance, possession of proceeds of crime and failure to comply with release conditions. Abdi-Ahmed was charged with similar offences during an unrelated 2019 ALERT investigation.
CALGARY A 50-year-old Canmore man has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of possessing and making child pornography available. David Aschim admitted to making child pornography available over a five-week period in 2018 as well as possessing child pornography from mid-2018 through to his arrest in early January 2020. The investigation into Aschim followed nine reports to the United States National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding uploads from two accounts on the social networking site Rabbit. A search of the Internet Protocol address led police to Aschim s residence in Canmore where several electronic devices were seized on Jan. 3, 2020 as part of an investigation by RCMP and the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams internet child exploitation (ICE) unit.

Two Lethbridge residents face charges including child endangerment after a three-year-old child was found during a drug bust.
Lethbridge police say the service’s crime suppression team began an investigation earlier this month and observed activity indicating drug trafficking at a home in the 1400 block of 12 Avenue North.
