2 seriously injured during precarious hike on Vancouver Island

VICTORIA Three lost hikers, two of whom were seriously injured, were rescued by search teams from Mount Arrowsmith on Vancouver Island on Sunday. Search manager Dave Poulsen of the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad says the hikers called for assistance around 3 p.m. Poulson says the trio were inexperienced and had not attempted to climb Mount Arrowsmith before. The hikers had taken a popular trail, Judges Route, up the mountain but had lost the trail coming back down. “They had ended up in an area that was quite technical and one of them sustained a fall as a result,” said Poulsen.

Hypothermic man pulled from river in risky rescue

“The forces on us were absolutely incredible,” Rivers said Sunday. “To be honest with you, I don’t know exactly how I was able to hang onto him for as long as I did. It was definitely not easy. I’m very sore today.” The team was called out at 3:08 p.m. Saturday, arriving on the scene just 12 minutes later. “We found the individual straddling a log in the middle of the river … So a very precarious position.” That’s when Rivers attached his ropes and was lowered 26 metres from a cliff into the water. “We know that he is going to quite cold so we wanted to move urgently.”
