How to fight the new climate war
Eminent climate scientist Michael E Mann on the deniers’ new tactics and why positive change feels closer than it has done in 20 years
By Jonathan Watts / The Guardian
Michael E Mann is one of the world’s most influential climate scientists. He rose to prominence in 1999 as the co-author of the “hockey-stick graph,” which showed the sharp rise in global temperatures since the industrial age. This was the clearest evidence anyone had provided of the link between human emissions and global warming. This made him a target. He and other scientists have been subject to “climategate” e-mail hacking, personal abuse and online trolling. In his new book, The New Climate War, he argues the tide may finally be turning in a hopeful direction.

We must change to battle climate change

My summer reading has not been solely the usual escapism that I aim for to recover from the year (what a year!) just gone. I have also been reading a number of environmental texts, including one about Deep Adaptation, which I actually wish was fiction because its premise would make 2020 seem like an absolute party.
Hoping that it could be classed as doomism to the max (yes, I’ve read the counter-arguments), I then saw the latest report that our planet is continuing to experience temperatures at record levels, putting us in the ballpark of at least a three-degree global temperature increase instead of just the hoped-for one degree.
