Telco association denies planned device obsolescence is a trade tactic

The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) has jumped to the defence of its members to point out that they do not engage in planned obsolescence as a strategy.
Members of the industry group include Singtel-Optus, TPG, Telstra, Motorola, Samsung, Ericsson, and ZTE, among others. This is evidenced by the longevity of mobile handsets in the market and supported by the ability of consumers to update the software on older handsets without having to replace the hardware, AMTA said in its submission [PDF] in response to the Productivity Commission s right to repair issues paper.
The company is building semiconductor devices, including processor chips, that are relevant to quantum computing and lab-on-a-chip biosensor technology.

Perth-based managed services provider Novata Solutions has appointed Gary Wainwright in in the newly created general manager role.
Novata has told CRN that the appointment marks a change in strategy as it grows into a medium-sized business and is committing to a definite management structure.
Wainwright’s appointment is the first part of a major strategy to expand the business and gain more enterprise level clients, as well as greater engagement in the WA State Government, a Novata spokesperson said.
The company recently gained supplier status on the West Australian Government CUA2021 (Common Use Agreement) panel, allowing it to formally transact with all departments and local government.
