Sport by Matt Logue 2nd Feb 2021 11:09 AM Australian NBA star Patty Mills will launch his Indigenous Basketball Australia (IBA) league for the next generation of Indigenous youth this Sunday, with 960 athletes to compete in eight locations across the country. Mills founded the league to provide a participation and success pathway for the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths. The three-time Olympian and NBA champion wants to ensure that Indigenous kids can overcome any challenges or barriers to have a better chance of excelling on the national and international stage. The competition will run across Australia, including Cairns, Logan, Adelaide, Perth, and Dubbo in regional NSW, with the first round of games scheduled to tip-off after the ceremonies.

I set the scene as this is important, to get the full impact of the story. Some time ago my wife Delma and I were packing the 2000 model dual cab Holden Rodeo for our road trip from Tweed Heads to Laguna Quays (Whitsundays) to set up the Basil Sellers Laguna Quays Respite facility. This is the third such facility that Well-Being Australia provides for elite athletes and missionaries. The other two are in Moruya on the NSW south coast and Tweed Heads on the north coast.

Our National Squad now include: High Performance Squad – Current world-class athletes who have demonstrated their ability to regularly make finals and win medals in International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) competitions in recent years Performance Squad – Athletes who are regularly achieving selection to National Teams and whose international performances indicate that they are ‘on track’ to making finals and win medals in ISSF competitions Pathways Squad – Athletes who are considered capable of achieving National Team selection based largely on their performances in domestic competition (i.e. junior or senior) and demonstrated commitment to becoming a High Performance athlete.

Date Time $1.7m to upgrade facilities for Australia’s elite male rowers Minister for Sport Richard Colbeck has officially opened facility upgrades to the Reinhold Batschi Men’s National Training Centre (RBMNTC) in Canberra. The $1.7 million upgrades, funded by the Australian Government through Sport Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), provides the elite rowing facility with improved changing rooms, laundry, consultation rooms and better disabled access. The centre was originally built in the early 1980s as part of the AIS Rowing Facility and this significant investment represents the biggest upgrade to the elite training facility in 35 years. Minister Colbeck said the Australian Government continues to invest in high performance facilities around the country to benefit our Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
