New Canaan Public Schools Enrollment Projections Call for Slight Decline Next Academic Year

Despite a high number of move-ins in this strong local real estate market, enrollment projections for New Canaan Public Schools call for an overall slight decline next academic year, district officials say. As of June 18, the district had 4,070 students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade, and is projected to reach 4,095, according to data made public at last week’s Board of Education meeting. The figures compare to 4,176 students enrolled K-12 in the school year that just ended, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jill Correnty said during the June 21 Board of Ed meeting, held in the Wagner Room at New Canaan High School.

The Lamoille South school district has selected a new principal for Stowe High School and could name a new superintendent next week. David Greenfield was appointed Tuesday as the next Stowe High principal, effective July 1. He will replace Gretchen Muller, who announced in December she accepted a job at Camel’s Hump Middle School, also starting July 1. Greenfield is currently assistant principal at Indian Ridge Middle School in Davie, Fla. “I want to be part of a community that works together for the greater good of its residents and students,” Greenfield said in a statement released Wednesday. “I have worked in the area of administration as well as guidance and counseling for 18 years and truly enjoy the ability to have a positive impact on each student I work with.”

By Mariah Melendez, Cheshire Herald staff CHESHIRE — The School Modernization Committee recently presented its proposal for Phase 1 of an expansive infrastructure plan to the Town Council and the Board of Education.  The committee presented two potential scenarios — one which involves the construction of two new elementary schools on opposite sides of town, while the other calls for the demolition of Chapman Elementary School, construction of a brand-new school on the property, and construction of a middle school for grades 6 to 8. Option 6 — the one favored by the SMC — calls for the construction of a new K-through-6th-grade school on the north end of town that would cost between $51.5 and $62.5 million, and a second school at the south end that would cost between $55.6 and $66.8 million.
