According to internal data, obtained by HSJ, London Ambulance Service Trust redirected more than 12,800 emergency 999 calls to other ambulance trusts across the country. This includes just over 1,000 category one calls, which are those deemed immediately life-threatening. LAS has faced immense pressure recently due to the covid-19 pandemic. The East of England Ambulance Service has seen a steady increase in Covid patients since January 2 and said that its focus was on patient and staff safety. Marcus Bailey, chief operating officer, told the trust s board meeting on Wednesday that calls started to rocket on December 27 and 28 and entering January it was important to mitigate the loss of patient-facing staff following a rise in sickness.

THE devastated family of a teenage motorcyclist who was killed when his bike crashed have slammed vandals for destroying his memorial site. Tommy Young, 17, died last July after his motorbike struck a lamppost, in Frinton Road, Kirby Cross, near Parker’s Garden Company. Paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service had rushed to the scene but, despite their best efforts, were unable to save his life. As the news of the Tendring Technology College student’s tragic death filtered through the village, an outpouring of grief saw hundreds of people send their condolences. In the days that followed the accident, a section of wall not far from the crash site started to become a shrine honouring Tommy’s memory.

The works at the Slip End turning for Ashwell mean the area will be closed from 8pm to 5am on January 20 to 30, with some lane closures during the day.
