One time at Band Camp a 70-year-old Hispanic lady put her hands down my Dress Blues pants while I was on the march… But more about that later.

First, I’d like to say that
SOFREP has some extremely knowledgeable staff writers and some guys who are still, or have been, Grade-A savages. Most of the stuff I did while in the Marine Corps involved marching, traveling, and tuning. But on a parade deck. I was in the Parris Island Marine Band, and here’s my story.
St. Louis, MO, 1999. Bill Clinton is still president (but he neither inhaled nor had sexual relations with that woman). The St. Louis Rams actually have a pretty good football team (13-3). Mark McGwire was still demolishing baseballs at home plate but the St. Louis Cardinals had an abysmal overall season record of 75-86 (ouch). And then there was me. I had started Junior College that fall and I absolutely hated it. I skipped more classes than I attended. I’d never liked school, but I was there at no cost to myself courtesy of a trombone scholarship. Plus, I had no one making me attend. So, I didn’t.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
Editor's Note: Jack Becker, editor of Caprock Chronicles, is a librarian at Texas Tech University Libraries. He can be reached at jack.becker@ttu.edu. Today’s article about Lubbock’s early movie theaters is the second of a two-part series by frequent contributor Chuck Lanehart, Lubbock attorney and historian. In Part One, the Band Hall and Orpheum Opera House were examined.
Erving McElroy, operator of the rickety old 1909 Opera House theater, decided Lubbock needed a proper movie house, and his idea produced the first big bright lights in a small dark town. In 1913, he established the Lyric Theatre on Texas Avenue at a prime location across the street from the Lubbock County Courthouse, and the Opera House soon disappeared.

Dave found the kitchen empty; from the bottom of the stairs, he heard the murmurs of the women’s voices in the bedroom with Mary, so he went out back to pace and wait. How funny life can be, he thought. Here he was, fifty years old and about to become a father again. He’d been sure that part of his life was over when he and Lura divorced many years ago. A certain hardness sets in when a man loses his family life, to say nothing of the house he built, a house that held his heart, soul and bank account. Still, he could hold his head up; he’d done right by his oldest daughter, Leila, and her mother. That house, perched on top of Rankin’s Hill [380 Camden Road

After a closure for three years due to damage suffered by Hurricane Harvey, the Humble Museum reopened formally in an all new location. The new museum is now housed in the former band hall of the Charles Bender Performing Art Center (located at 601 Higgins St.).
The opening ceremony took place Saturday, Nov.14th, during which many speakers shared their thoughts on the museum’s reopening.
Dr. Robert Meaux, who is the President of the Board of Directors for the Humble Museum, spearheaded the effort in getting the museum operational and setting up exhibits during the last few months, despite the countless challenges faced due to the COVID pandemic. He explained that the Humble Museum was ready to be occupied in Spring, but the pandemic put a further halt to a grand opening, forcing him and his wife to work in solitude setting up exhibits for several months. During his closing remarks at the ceremony, he thanked his wife, crediting her for doing a phenomenal job in getting the museum exhibits ready alongside him. He added that it would take approximately four hours to read through every item at the museum and encouraged anyone interested to reserve a few hours of the day to merely enjoy the history at hand.
