Two offshore drilling rigs, previously used for oil and gas exploration beneath the seabed, could soon help with space exploration.
Namely, according to multiple reports this week, a company linked to billionaire Elon Musk bought two deepwater semi-submersible drilling rigs last year, with plans - reportedly - to convert them into floating launch pads for Musk s SpaceX rockets.
SpaceX, or Space Exploration Technologies Corp, was founded by Musk back in 2002 to cut space transportation costs and enable the colonization of Mars.
According to CNBC, a company named Lone Star Mineral Development, linked to Musk s Space X firm, in July 2020 bought two semi-submersible drilling rigs from Valaris.

Geospatial analytics services provider Satellogic has announced its agreement with Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) for launching its Earth-mapping satellites to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) on the latter s Falcon 9 medium-lift launch vehicle. Satellogic intends to build a constellation of 300+ microsatellites (a small satellite weighing less than 50 kilograms) and its deal with SpaceX covers multiple rideshare launches, the first of which is slated for June later this year.

By Andy Pasztor and Andrew Tangel NASA and Boeing Co. suffered a potentially major setback in their deep-space ambitions when the engines for a giant new rocket shut down prematurely Saturday during a key test on the ground. The engines were supposed to produce power for eight minutes but shut down after about 60 seconds while fastened to a stand at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. Program officials had said four minutes would be the minimum time to gain confidence in the reliability of the engines, fuel system and surrounding structures. National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials said they couldn t immediately determine the cause of the premature shutdown, and therefore it was too early to determine what fixes would be necessary or even if the test needed to be repeated. They said engineers didn t know whether it was a hardware, software or sensor malfunction.
