The tightened Covid-19 border controls have left the migrant domestic worker (MDW) market strained, as fewer helpers have been allowed into Singapore since the pandemic.
This has led to the popularity of transfers among MDWs currently working here, but the process has not been smooth.
According to non-governmental organisations and employment agencies, MDWs have to obtain their current employers’ permission before they may transfer to a new employer, and many have been denied transfers amid the pandemic as employers claim it would be hard to find a new helper.

SINGAPORE: A man accused of physically abusing a domestic helper in his household was acquitted of all four charges on Wednesday (Jul 21), after the judge found the maid's evidence inconsistent and incoherent.
Alan Tan Chai Soon, 49, was given a discharge amounting to an acquittal for three counts of voluntarily causing hurt to a domestic helper, and one count of using criminal force on her.

Migrant worker John Britto was terrified when he received a lawyer's letter asserting that he had failed as a supervisor in taking care of a colleague who had suffered an injury at work.
Fortunately, the 37-year-old Indian national sought advice from non-governmental organisation Migrant Workers' Centre, which told him he was not at fault over the incident.
The claim in the letter, sent in 2019, was eventually withdrawn, he said.
Migrant workers like Mr Britto may now be in a better position to seek help, with the launch of the Migrant Workers' Group (MWG) on Saturday.
