NWHU Reports Seven New Cases

Seven new cases of COVID-19 are being reported Tuesday morning by the Northwestern Health Unit. They tell us that six come from the Sioux Lookout health hub and the other from the Dryden area. The regional health authority says there are now 53 active cases in the region, up from the 51 reported on Monday. The Sioux Lookout region continues to lead the way with 32 active cases, while the Kenora health hub is the only other area with a double-digit case count (16 active cases). Only three other health hubs have active cases; Fort Frances (three), Emo (one) and Dryden (one). The total number of cases since the pandemic began now sits at 1,011 with 958, or around 95 per-cent, now resolved.

Thunder Bay vaccination rates tumble for second straight week

That prediction became reality on Tuesday. The health unit announced it had given out a total of 5,755 vaccinations, including 5,089 first doses, in the week that ended this past Saturday. That’s down 1,424 from the total number given out the week prior. They also gave out 571 fewer first doses last week. It’s the second straight week the number of first doses has dropped and the third straight week the overall number of vaccines administered declined. The region did hit a vaccine milestone last week, crossing the 40 per cent threshold, climbing to 41.2 per cent of the overall population having received their first jab. Of the population 16 and older, 48.8 per cent of the population has received a first dose.

Province expands vaccine roll-out to 40 and older, restaurant and grocery workers

TORONTO – Ontarians 40 and older will be eligible to start booking COVID-19 vaccinations this week. The province on Monday confirmed the eligibility age is being lowered to include the 40-plus crowd, starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, meaning in Thunder Bay they’ll be able to book an appointment through the provincial portal for a vaccination spot at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit’s mass vaccination clinic at the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition. Anyone born in 1981 or earlier is eligible. The province also expanded bookings to those with at-risk health conditions, including dementia, diabetes and sickle cell disease, as well as Group Two people who are unable to work from home, including grocery store employees, those involved in transportation and grocery store workers.
