It is high time to end the vicious cycle involving corruption cases where those involved lie low until the issue dies down - and the public can play a more active role to achieve this, Sen. Panfilo M. Lacson said Friday.
Lacson, who has actively participated in many Senate investigations involving corruption cases, said those involved have become brazen in pocketing public funds by exploiting such a cycle. Some officials have lost all sense of shame. Even if charges are filed against them, they just lie low because they know that once the issue dies down and the public no longer thinks much of it, they can go back to their old ways, he said in an interview on Radyo Katribu.

The tug-of-war between private hospitals and the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) rages on. Amid a surging pandemic and calls from the Department of Health (DOH) for provision of more beds and facilities, hospital owners report that they are constrained to lay off health workers as PhilHealth receivables have reportedly ballooned to about P30 billion.
Private hospitals bear the brunt of tertiary health care as the DOH operates a limited number of district hospitals in regional and urban centers. This explains the stark reality that up to seven out of every 10 Filipinos live and die without seeing a doctor.

“PhilHealth is currently looking into new incidents of ‘upcasing’ in relation to COVID claims,” Guevarra said.
“With a former NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) chief as President/CEO, PhilHealth can very well handle this new investigation,” he stressed.
“But the DOJ/NBI will be ready to provide assistance if requested,” assured Guevarra.
PhilHealth is now headed by Dante A. Gierran whose prior government post was NBI director.
Last year, Guevarra formed Task Force PhilHealth pursuant to the Aug. 7, 2020 memorandum of President Duterte who directed the DOJ secretary “to organize a panel for the conduct of an investigation on the various allegations of corruption and anomalies in the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), including the audit of the PhilHealth finances and conduct of lifestyle checks of its officials and employees.”
