After six months at the head of the Galt Police Department, Interim Chief Brian Kalinowski will soon pass the role to Lt. Richard âRickâ Small.
The official switch will happen on April 26, marking the halfway point of an arrangement put in place after the retirement last year of the previous permanent chief. But Kalinowski and Small said they have been working together to ensure consistent leadership.
âSo I expect that when Rick transitions over next Monday that itâll be a seamless transition,â Kalinowski told the Herald.
Small noted that while âthe chief has the final say, we operate under the belief that collaborating together and having multiple opinions and talking through issues always produces the best results.â

Postmaster Ferdinand Lagat expressed frustration with the ongoing mail thefts in Galt. Interim Chief Brian Kalinowski said his department received reports of 18 boxes being vandalized and is spreading the word about the break-ins on social media.
âWe have seen an increase throughout the city,â Kalinowski said, âmostly in locked community boxes being broken into. This type of activity is related to identity theft; we posted a link for info. We are doing further work/investigation on this issue but do not have anything to send out further on this at this time.â
âThey are hitting us every weekend,â Lagat said. âItâs happening on both sides of town but more on the east side between Stockton Boulevard and Carillion Boulevard.â
