Indiana s Black community is more at risk for COVID-19 yet hesitant to get the vaccine | Wellness

. As eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine opens up for all Hoosiers, those who identify as white and Asian are taking the lead in getting vaccinated while some minority groups are falling behind. According to the state’s vaccine dashboard, 6% of available vaccines have been claimed by those who identify as Black in Indiana. Data from the Kaiser Family Foundation shows just 22% of those who are Black have been vaccinated in the state.  While COVID-19 has affected all of the nation regardless of race, Black people are being hospitalized almost three times more than white people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The state on Sunday recorded 1,198 new coronavirus cases and 10 new deaths.  Indiana has now recorded a total of 698,692 positive tests and 12,743 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. A total of 9,212,718 people have been tested for the virus in Indiana. Hoosiers age 16 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. In Marion County, the health department is hosting a pop-up vaccine clinic in partnership with Indiana University and local churches. The clinic is hosted at Light of the World Christian Church on Saturday until 5 p.m., for adults 18+, and on Sunday from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. for youth ages 16 and 17. Opinion: US COVID immunization depends on college vaccinations

Some schools, like Rutgers and Cornell universities, are mandating that all students be immunized. Why is this necessary, given that students have had negligible fatality risk from COVID-19? As of December 2020, 400,000 college students had confirmed COVID-19 infection, with just six reported deaths, a rate well below the fatality risk in this age cohort from all other causes (with accidents at the top of this list). Moreover, the number of infections is likely many times higher, since so many students have been asymptomatic. Based on this data, is mandatory COVID-19 vaccination on college campuses necessary?  The answer is yes. Though students have minimal personal health risk from COVID-19, they are part of the 18-to-29-year-old cohort, which is the single-largest vector of coronavirus transmission.  As the virus continues to circulate, it also mutates, resulting in new coronavirus variants, like B.1.1.7, or the UK variant, which is on track to become the most widely circ
