FedEx released a statement to NBC News early Friday morning.
“We are aware of the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility near the Indianapolis airport, it read. Safety is our top priority, and our thoughts are with all those who are affected. We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities.”
A witness who said he works at the facility told WISH-TV that he saw a man with a gun after hearing several gunshots.
“I saw a man with a submachine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open,” Jeremiah Miller said.
An Indianapolis man faces federal charges after police say they recovered ammunition, drugs and money from his home during a SWAT search last week.
According to federal court records, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has been investigating John McDonough, 34, as part of an ongoing drugs and firearm probe. Officers secured a search warrant of his home on the 5600 block of Personality Court, south of Elmwood Avenue, on suspicion of drug trafficking.
In their April 7 search, IMPD’s SWAT officers uncovered a Smith & Wesson handgun, a Charter Arms revolver, Remington 12-gauge shotgun, Glock 17 pistol and about $31,000 in a locked safe in the house’s master bedroom, a criminal complaint said.

INDIANAPOLIS Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said they responded to an active shooter incident after 11pm Thursday night at the FedEx building at 8951 Mirabel Rd. near the Indianapolis International Airport.
Police said they found multiple people shot at the scene and were taken to several hospitals.
A witness told 13News he was working inside the FedEx building when he heard gunshots. He said looked up and saw a gunman and ducked down when he heard several more shots. The shooting witness said when he ran out of the building, he saw one person who was injured on the ground and not moving.

Indianapolis police say multiple people were shot at a FedEx facility on the city s southwest side late Thursday and the suspected gunman killed himself.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says officers came upon an active shooter incident when they arrived. They reported finding numerous victims.
IMPD spokesperson Genae Cook told reporters early Friday that, We have multiple people with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. She didn t say how many or what condition they were in.
She said it appears the shooter took his own life, adding, We don t feel that there is an active threat to the community at this time.
