ICSD hosts information session on surveillance testing program - 870 AM 97 7FM News Talk WHCU870 AM 97 7FM News Talk WHCU

Photo: WHCU ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The Ithaca City School District is preparing to begin its surveillance Covid-19 testing program January 4th. Testing is not mandatory, but the district hopes to test 20% of the school’s in-person students and staff every two weeks. This will help the district identify possible outbreaks as early as possible to keep case counts low. Testing is free for students and staff and the kits are being provided to the district at no cost through the state. The district will be using BinaxNOW antigen rapid tests, which uses a much less invasive nasal swab than previous tests.

2020 in review: COVID-19 was the story | Cornell Chronicle

2020 in review: COVID-19 was the story December 21, 2020 The first mention of the word “coronavirus” in a Cornell Chronicle story in 2020 came on Jan. 29, when the university designated mainland China as an elevated-risk destination, and imposed travel restrictions on students, faculty and staff. Since then, there have been more than 300 stories or university statements that mention COVID-19 posted on news.cornell.edu. It has been the story of the year. The most-read Chronicle story of the year was a Weill Cornell Medicine-produced research FAQ from April 20, “Why is COVID-19 mild for some, deadly for others?” Given the fact that so much remains unknown about this mysterious virus, it’s no surprise that more than 60,000 readers – and counting – clicked on this story.

Superintendent Doctor Luvelle Brown says the testing program is voluntary for students and staff. The program itself will be a non-invasive form of antigen testing. Brown says that although the Ithaca City School District hasn’t been identified as a Yellow Zone under new state guidelines, they’ll be following those guidelines and test 20 percent of in-person students and staff at each school over two-week periods. The testing is not mandatory. In-person learning will begin Monday, January 4th. Tags:

In a letter to the public, Superintendent Doctor Luvelle Brown says mandatory isolation and quarantine of several students and staff in the district triggered the move. Brown says in-person learning should resume after the winter break, January 4th. Once everyone returns, Brown writes “a COVID-19 testing program will be implemented to support in-person learning for those who’ve selected that option,” adding coordination of the testing program is ongoing. Superintendent Brown’s full letter to the community Dear Ithaca City School District Community, The community spread of COVID-19 has resulted in many mandatory isolations and quarantines of students and staff across our schools.
