India, Pakistan armies exchange fire in Kashmir
SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir (Xinhua) India and Pakistan troops Friday fired at each other’s positions on the line-of-control (LoC) in Kashmir, officials said.
The cease-fire violation took place in the evening in Mendhar sector of frontier Poonch district, about 185 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
\”Pakistani army today at 4:45 p.m. (local time) violated cease- fire and targeted our positions in Mendhar area,\” said S N Acharaya, Indian army spokesman in Jammu. \”Our side also retaliated to Pakistani firing with similar caliber weapons.\”
According to Acharaya, intermittent firing was going on until last reports came in.

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, May 17 (Xinhua) Two militants were killed Monday in a fierce gunfight with government forces in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The gunfight erupted at village Khanmoh on the outskirts of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. Today morning a gunfight broke out at village Khanmoh here in which two militants were killed, a senior police official posted in Srinagar said. Gunfight in the area started after joint contingents of police, paramilitary and army cordoned off the area. No sooner they reached the suspected area, they came under heavy fire, thereby evoking a retaliation.

Police in Indian-controlled Kashmir said Saturday that 21 people were arrested for disturbing public order by expressing solidarity with Palestinians and holding protests against Israelâs military offensive in Gaza.
Police said in a statement they were keeping a âclose watch on elements who are attempting to leverage the unfortunate situation in Palestine to disturb public peace and orderâ in Kashmir. The statement said police were âsensitive to public anguishâ but wouldnât allow those sentiments to âtrigger violence, lawlessness, and disorder.â
