Amid rising concerns of the advent of the third Covid wave in India, Gujarat on Saturday reported five cases of Kappa variant of the virus, officials said. This is the first time that the Kappa variant of the virus has been reported in the state. Of the five cases, three were reported in Jamnagar, two in Godhra in Pahchmahal district and one in Mehsana, the state government said in a statement.

São Paulo: Indian pharmaceutical giant Bharat Biotech’s ambitious plans to sell millions of doses of its highly-priced vaccine, Covaxin, to Brazil all but crashed on Saturday after the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) decided to scrap the company’s application for emergency use authorisation (EUA). In a unanimous decision, the executive board of the Brazilian regulator declared that the application will no longer be evaluated. The decision, just a day after the Indian company announced the cancellation of its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Precisa Medicamentos of Brazil, has now set the stage for the termination of the $300-million deal for the supply 20 million doses of Covaxin from India to Brazil.

PUNE/MUMBAI: From 51% to 60% of the samples sent from six districts of the state for the fourth national sero-survey had Covid-19 antibodies in them, revealed data even as the state continued to report a decline in new coronavirus infections on Saturday.
Though there was a decline in new case detections to 6,269, there was also a sudden rise in fatalities to 224, the highest in 23 days.
The sero-survey was conducted with samples taken from the general public and healthcare workers from Beed, Parbhani, Nanded, Sangli, Ahmednagar and Jalgaon. The samples were sent to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), where experts said that the results indicated that at least half of the population in most of these districts might now possess immunity against SARS-CoV-2. The rest remain vulnerable to the virus.

VADODARA/AHMEDABAD: The state health department on Saturday announced that five cases of ‘Kappa’ variant of coronavirus were detected in Gujarat. Of these, three infections were found in Jamnagar and one each in Godhra and Mehsana.
The government in a release stated that the genome sequencing of samples of these patients, who had tested positive for Covid-19 between March and June this year, revealed that they were infected by the new variant which is classified as ‘variant of interest’ by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The health department also traced those who came in contact with these patients. “So far, none of the contacts of those found infected Kappa variant has been found to have Covid-19 symptoms,” the department said. One of the Panchmahal residents detected with Kappa variant had died on June 30.
