The country is the world s second biggest sugar producer and the higher output could weigh on global prices. Maharashtra, the country s second biggest sugar producing state, churned out 6.38 million tonnes of sugar in the four months, compared to 3.46 million tonnes a year ago, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in a statement on Tuesday.

Image Source: IANS News New Delhi, Feb 2 : Sugar production in the country rose by over 25 per cent to 176.83 lakh tonnes in the four months of the current cane crushing season 2020-21 (October-September), compared with 141.04 lakh tonnes during the corresponding period in 2019-20 season. The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said on Tuesday in a statement that 491 sugar mills in operation as of January 31, 2021 produced 176.83 lakh tonnes of sugar from October 2020 till January 2021, compared with 141.04 lakh tonnes produced by 447 mills as of January 31, 2020.
