The rift in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala came out in the open a day after the party faced a major setback in the local body polls. On Thursday, posters appeared in the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office, seeking to dissolve the district Congress committee.

Thiruvananthapuram: The rout in the local body elections has set off fireworks within Congress as well as the United Democratic Front (UDF), with a number of leaders accusing the party leadership of a clear disconnect with people and calling for a complete revamp of the party apparatus.
K Sudhakaran, Rajmohan Unnithan and K Muraleedharan demanded that all the leaders of district units must be changed forthwith, while also raising the heat for a change of leadership at the top, including state party president Mullappally Ramachandran and opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala.

Front makes emphatic victories in municipalities
The United Democratic Front (UDF) staged a sterling performance in the elections to the three-tier local bodies in Malappuram district by winning 26 of the 32 district panchayat divisions, 12 of the 15 block panchayats, nine of the 12 municipalities and 74 of the 94 grama panchayats on Wednesday.
While the UDF recaptured power in Tirur Municipality from the LDF, it lost power in Nilambur Municipality. The Congress lost power in Nilambur after several terms, thanks to the tactical ‘independent’ move by the LDF.
When the LDF retained power in Ponnani and Perinthalmanna municipalities in the district, the UDF made emphatic victories in Kondotty, Kottakkal, Parappanangadi, Tirurangadi, Valanchery, Malappuram, Manjeri, Tirur and Tanur municpalities.

Kunhalikutty says UDF didn’t suffer as much as being portrayed A meeting of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) high-power committee held here on Thursday decided to hold a special meeting of the party’s State working committee to review the local body elections.
The review meeting would be held here on December 23, said IUML State general secretary K.P.A. Majeed. He said it was too early to comment about the election results. “We will say anything further only after a thorough review of the results,” he said.
