Eluru mystery illness: Govt says pesticide residues in water caused outbreak

Eluru: The outbreak of the mysterious disease in West Godavari district’s Eluru was caused by the pesticide residues in drinking water, the Andhra Pradesh government on Wednesday. The town has returned to normalcy, with no new cases reported in the past three days.
The main reason has been revealed in a video conference held by chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy with representatives of various research institutes that conducted independent studies on the outbreak of the disease.

(AFP) A long-term, in-depth study is required to understand how these residues of pesticides entered the human body, the state government said.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and other organisations on Wednesday have found that pesticide residues were the reason for the outbreak of the mysterious illness in Andhra Pradesh s West Godavari district headquarters Eluru, a state government statement said. The experts said a long-term, in-depth study is required to understand how these residues of pesticides entered the human body, it said.

Eluru town returned to normal on Tuesday, as no more cases were reported of the undiagnosed illness that has sent the State into a tizzy.
Four patients with neurotoxicity symptoms are undergoing treatment at the Vijayawada Government General Hospital.
District Coordinator of Hospital Services (DCHS) Dr. A.V.R. Mohan said all the patients were discharged in good health and they are doing well.
Meanwhile, the High-Level Committee headed by Chief Secretary Nilaw Sawhney met the patients at the hospital and recorded their statements. They asked the patients who were admitted at Eluru Government General Hospital (GGH) with neurotoxicity symptoms.

Eluru: A week after the first reported case, the cause of the mystery illness, that affected over 600 and killed one so far in the West Godavari district’s Eluru, continues to elude the experts.
As of Friday evening, the mystery illness sickened as many as 616 people, of which 576 people have been discharged and one person–45-year old Sridhar, succumbed. Besides, two more persons, who were admitted with similar symptoms, died at a hospital in Vijayawada late Wednesday night, but the doctors said the causes of death were different.
