NEW DELHI: A day after the income tax department conducted multi-city searches on the offices of Dainik Bhaskar and Bharat Samachar on charges of alleged tax evasion, the Editors Guild of India said it is worried that government agencies are being used as a “coercive tool” to suppress free and independent journalism.
“The Editors Guild of India is concerned about the income tax raids on July 22 at the offices of country’s leading newspaper group Dainik Bhaskar as well as a Lucknow-based independent news channel Bharat Samachar,” it said in a statement.
Apart from EGI, the Press Club of India, Community to Protect Journalists and the Indian Women Press Corps also condemned the action against the media groups, each alleging that the agencies’ action was an attempt to “intimidate” and deter independent media.
