‘It is questioning India’s sovereign right to tax’
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has hinted that the government will appeal against the recent international arbitration award favouring Cairn Plc, especially as it questioned the country’s sovereign right to taxation. In December, an international tribunal had given an award of $1.2 billion with interest and cost favouring the Edinburgh-based energy major.

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said the entire fiscal stimulus announced by the government would be funded by borrowings and revenues, and taxpayers will not be charged even a single penny. I am not expecting the stimulus to be funded by taxpayers. Not a rupee from the taxpayer. The entire amount .. is shown as revenue and borrowings. On being asked about income tax raids conducted at properties owned by Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said the same people were “raided” in 2013 as well but no it was not a problem like it is now.
“When it (raids) happens during a govt, it s fine; when it happens during this govt, it s not. The same people were raided in 2013 too, it wasn t an issue, but it s an issue now,” said FM Sitharaman during a press conference on Friday.
