24 Jul 2021, 04:05 GMT+10
WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to India next week, the State Department said on Friday, in the top U.S. diplomat s first visit to the world s largest democracy and an important U.S. ally in Asia.
Blinken will also visit Kuwait and meet senior officials there at the end of the July 26-29 trip.
The United States sees India as an important partner in efforts to stand up to China s increasingly assertive behavior. Blinken s trip will follow a visit by Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman to China and coincide with one to Southeast Asia by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has made a rare visit to Tibet as authorities tighten controls over the Himalayan region s traditional Buddhist culture, accompanied by an accelerated drive for economic development and modernized infrastructure.
State media reported Friday that Xi visited sites in the capital Lhasa, including the Drepung Monastery, Barkhor Street and the public square at the base of the Potala Palace that was home to the Dalai Lamas, Tibet s traditional spiritual and temporal leaders. Xi s visit was previously unannounced publicly and it wasn t clear whether he had already returned to Beijing.
China has in recent years stepped up controls over Buddhist monasteries and expanded education in the Chinese rather than Tibetan language. Critics of such policies are routinely detained and can receive long prison terms, especially if they have been convicted of association with the 86-year-old Dalai Lama, who has lived in exile in India since fleeing Tibet
NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi s main political rival Rahul Gandhi on Friday demanded an inquiry into the Pegasus spyware scandal, accusing the government of “treason”.
Gandhi is one of dozens of Indian politicians, journalists and government critics on an alleged global database of 50,000 possible Pegasus spying targets that was revealed by an international group of media outlets.
The Indian government has rejected spying claims although critics note it has not said whether it is a client of NSO Group, the Israeli maker of the Pegasus spyware which effectively captures a target s cellphone.
The claims have sparked uproar in the Indian parliament, with one opposition MP since suspended on Thursday snatching and ripping up the text of a statement on the subject being delivered by IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
