Kochi corporation councillor succumbs to COVID-19

Sivan, Kochi corporation councillor and a leader of the CITU in Ernakulam, died of COVID-related complications here on Saturday morning. He was 55. His battle with COVID was a protracted one, according to Mayor M. Anilkumar. He had tested positive on April 19 and was initially recovering at the COVID care centre at PVS Hospital before he was shifted to a private hospital, and was in the ICU. Although he seemed to be getting better initially, he was placed on a ventilator two days ago, the Mayor said. He was diabetic and had high creatinine levels.

In a memorandum submitted to the district project officer on Thursday, CITU district secretary K. Rajaiah said that they must be provided with face cover, masks and hand gloves in view of the pandemic as they are likely to come in contact with suspected corona patients during the survey.

CITU: take over oxygen plant set up on VSP premises

‘Hand it over to the steel plant for production of oxygen’ Steel Plant Employees Union, an affiliate of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions( CITU), has demanded that the Centre take over the oxygen plant set up by Air Liquid India Holding Private Limited of France on the premises of RINL-Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) and hand it over to the VSP for production of oxygen. In a letter to Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday, CITU State president Ch. Narasinga Rao, honorary president B. Ganga Rao, president J. Ayodhya Ram and general secretary Y.T. Das noted that the then Union government in 2009 had allowed the French company to set up a plant to produce oxygen and nitrogen in the VSP.

Suryanarayana, leader of HPCL Employees Union, affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), died here on Sunday. The CPI(M) Greater Visakha City Committee condoled the death of Suryanarayana and expressed sympathies to the bereaved family members. Party Greater Visakha City Committee secretary B. Ganga Rao described the death as a loss to the working class. His struggles for the rights of the workers had made him a victim of harassment by the management with suspension and non-promotion, Mr. Ganga Rao said. The city committee leaders expressed their heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family members.
