Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala bags next four positions
The case for the southern states as the top performers has also become stronger as four of them occupy the top-five spots within the major states.
New Delhi: Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala have been ranked as the top five states in innovation in Niti Aayog s second Innovation Index released on Wednesday.
The index, released by Niti Aayog s Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar and CEO Amitabh Kant, has been developed on the lines of the Global Innovation Index.

JAMMU, Jan 20: Jammu Kashmir has been ranked at the bottom in the NITI Aayog’s Innovation Index, released today, covering all the States and Union Territories across India.
Among the Union Territories, Delhi tops the ranking in all the groups , followed by Chandigarh whereas Lakshadweep and Jammu Kashmir occupy the last two positions in the group respectively.
Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala have been ranked as the top five States while Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar are at the bottom of the innovation index, released today by the NITI Aayog’s Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar and Amitabh Kant.

Karnataka is crowned as the most innovative among major states in India based on various factors such as human capital, investments, business, legal environment and more. NITI Aayog, the government s policy think-tank, released its second Innovation Index on Wednesday, declaring the top five states in the innovation index.
According to the India Innovation Index Report 2020, released by Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar, Delhi topped the overall list and Chandigarh made a huge leap while Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh excelled in respective categories. As per the report, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala followed Karnataka s lead in the innovation index.

Snapshot Karnataka has topped NITI Aayogâs India Innovation Index two years in a row.
Karnataka has retained its position as the most innovative state in the country as per think tank NITI Aayogâs India Innovation Index.
âThe state has achieved top ranking in the list released by NITI Aayog on Wednesday. The state is able to maintain the leading position despite new indicators were added as parameters this time, major being the expenditure by states on R&D and new business registration in the state,â said Deputy Chief Minister Dr C N Ashwatha Narayana, who also holds the Information Technology portfolio.

Promote innovation
With reference to the the report on India Innovation Index compiled by NITI Aayog (January 21), the effort to compile and publish such an index is laudable.
Four of the southern States are among the top five. Why is it so?
Is it the higher literacy rates or English language skills of the population, or the States’ better economic metrics that support innovation? Alongside, Bihar, a State with a rich culture and heritage, is ranked last of 17 major States.
Innovation is a valuable asset in building a sustainable future. While it helps companies succeed, it can also play a role in social spheres such as power generation and distribution in rural areas, water conservation, sustainable agriculture, education, and public health.
