NEW DELHI: India’s National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) developed in 2009 are being revised to make them more exacting by measuring ultrafine PM 1 particles besides regular pollutants and also take into account use of new fuels and advancements in measuring health impacts. The revised NAAQS is expected to be finalised in 12 months.
Besides making the parameters more stringent, the new standards may add PM 1 (finer than PM 2.5) and other pollutants in the list for monitoring and developing new Air Quality Index (AQI). The revised standards, to be drawn up by the Central Pollution Control Board, will ensure a new AQI for India.
