SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) Unidentified gunmen shot dead a civilian in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said here on Friday.
The attack was carried out late Thursday evening in Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
The victim was identified as Satpal Nishal, a jewellery shop owner.
Police blame militants for the killing. Late last evening militants fired upon a civilian (a goldsmith) at his shop in Saraibala here, a police official said. Though he was removed to hospital immediately he succumbed there to his wounds.
Following the attack, contingents of police and paramilitary rushed to the spot to carry out searches for the assailants. However, the gunmen had managed to escape.
