Beck named works board official

Allen County Commissioner Rich Beck has been named regional chief elected official for the Northeast Indiana Works board, the organization announced Tuesday.
Beck replaces former Adams County Commissioner Doug Bauman.
The regional chief elected official position for workforce development boards is required by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. The position s responsibilities include serving as a point of contact for other regional elected officials, the governor, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development and the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet.
Beck, who took office as a county commissioner in 2018, has worked in the financial services industry for more than 40 years. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at universities in northeast Indiana and elsewhere in the country, has published articles on sales, marketing and management for trade magazines, and is the author of an edition of the Americ

In December 2019, before the pandemic, Bartholomew County had an unemployment rate of 2.1%.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The unemployment rate for the Hoosier state for December was 4.3%, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The national rate was reported at 6.7%.
Indiana’s labor force had a net increase of 83,609 over November, due to a decrease of 23,903 unemployed residents and an increase of 107,512 employed residents.
The state’s total labor force, which includes both residents employed and those seeking employment, stands at 3.39 million. State leaders continue to roll out the COVID-19 vaccine as cases decline and as the National Guard leaves nursing homes after helping them manage disease spread.Â
Gov. Eric Holcomb announced these and other updates in a weekly briefing on the pandemic, starting with good news: Indiana’s COVID-19 positivity trend is declining, going from 16.5% early this month to 9.1%. Daily hospital admissions are also dropping, though more data are being collected.
Hoosiers continue to die from the virus, however, with the state recording 40 new deaths Wednesday. That’s an increase of 200 from last week, totaling 9,470 deaths in Indiana. The state is also bracing for new strains of the virus that have emerged around the world.
ALBION â Dana Light Axle Products recently notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development that itâs closing its service parts and export packaging center at 401 E. Park Drive, Albion.
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification from plant manager Mike Zunk is dated Jan. 20. The WARN notice says the permanent layoffs affect about 43 full-time employees and 30 workers employed through temporary services companies.
Layoffs will take place April 30-May 31.
âThe decision to close the Albion plant was difficult but ultimately necessary in order to maximize Danaâs ability to be competitive within difficult market conditions,â according to Zunkâs letter.
Workers donât have bumping rights, but may be offered jobs at other Dana plants, according to Zunkâs letter.
