The correctional officer who was fatally stabbed at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City on Sunday has been identified as 57-year-old Lt. Eugene Lasco.
Lasco was attempting to intervene in an assault on another correctional officer when he was stabbed, the Indiana Department of Corrections said Monday. The other officer, 22-year-old Sgt. Padrick Schmitt, was also stabbed. He is in stable condition. Lt. Eugene Lasco paid the ultimate sacrifice, and we are forever indebted to his service to the State of Indiana, IDOC Commissioner Robert Carter said in a statement. Lt.
