North Hills student news: Psychology scholarship recipient, STEM winners and more

Psychology scholarship Rebecca Ettore, an honors psychology major at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, is a recipient of the 2021 IUP Stanley W. Lore Psychology Scholarship. Ettore, the daughter of Lisa Ettore and Donald Ettore, is a 2018 graduate of North Hills Senior High School. She is a dean’s list student and provost scholar. She is a member of Phi Sigma Pi honors fraternity, serving as social chair of the group, Psi Chi psychology honors fraternity and Phi Kappa Phi honor society. The scholarship is given each year to a junior psychology major who has achieved excellence in the program. The award is named for Dr. Stanley Lore, a founder and the first chairman of the IUP psychology department.

Altoona police arrest Pittsburgh man they say is connected to October murder in Indiana County

Wright, 20, of Pittsburgh was found shot in a parking lot on Oakland Avenue in Indiana about 4 a.m. Oct. 17, police said at the time. Initial investigations led police to believe four people conspired to rob Wright of a large quantity of marijuana, which led to the shooting. According to police, the four people fled following the incident at the Carriage House East apartment complex. Three of them were arrested earlier: • Isabella Marie Edmonds was 17 when she arraigned Oct. 17 on multiple charges of homicide and robbery and two counts of criminal conspiracy. Edmonds, who turned 18 Oct. 24, was charged as an adult. She was found walking along Oakland Avenue following the incident.

District judge of 5 years starts campaign Mar 5, 2021 REEDSVILLE – Magisterial District Judge Kent A. Smith has announced his intention to seek re-election in District 58-3-03, which serves Armagh, Brown, Union and Menno townships. Smith plans to cross-file in both the Democratic and Republican primaries. As district judge for the past five years, Smith has presided over preliminary hearings, landlord-tenant complaints and other civil cases. He has also provided notary services as has officiated weddings. He has also been appointed as special judge to preside over cases from Juniata, Centre and Blair counties. Smith’s office was deemed “exemplary” after a June 2020 audit through the state Auditor General’s office.

Pitt, Heinz History Center among organizations getting state grants to preserve historical documents

The University of Pittsburgh, the City of Pittsburgh and the Heinz History Center are among the organizations receiving grants from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission to help preserve the documents in their archives. Thirty-one Historical & Archival Records Care grants totaling nearly $200,000 are being distributed around the state to help organizations to “improve the preservation and accessibility of historically significant records maintained by local governments, historical societies and academic institutions,” according to the Commission. The city is getting an $8,016 grant to digitize and rehouse 24 volumes of city council minute books from 1816 to 1877 and to digitize 109 volumes of minutes and legislation from former municipalities annexed by the city.
