Renewables give Indonesia an edge in climate quest By PRIME SARMIENTO in Hong Kong | China Daily Global | Updated: 2021-06-14 00:00
Indonesia can tap its potential in renewable energy to fulfill the country s commitment to the Paris climate accord and reduce its dependence on coal-based power, according to analysts.
Southeast Asia s biggest economy aims to slash emissions by 29 percent by 2030. State-owned utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara said in May that it will stop building coal-fired power plants after 2023 to meet Indonesia s carbon-neutrality goals.
Sisilia Nurmala Dewi, Indonesia team leader of international environmental organization 350.org, welcomed the company s move on coal but called it insufficient to meet Indonesia s climate goals.

The cancellation covers a memorandum of understanding that the Labor premier, Daniel Andrews, signed with Chinaâs national development and reform commission in 2018. That included a pledge to work together on initiatives under Xi Jinpingâs signature Belt and Road infrastructure-building program.
The veto also targets the subsequent framework for establishing a working group, at a time when relations between the Australian and Chinese governments have sunk to the lowest levels in decades.
Andrews has previously defended the agreements on the basis that it was important to secure an increase in infrastructure investment in Victoria.
But Payne said she considered the agreements to fail the test in Australiaâs Foreign Relations (State and Territory Arrangements) Act, which passed the parliament late last year, after âreview and considerationâ.
