Interlochen Arts Academy Having End-Of-Year Festival

It’s an exciting time of the year for students, school is ending and plenty of graduations to celebrate! The Interlochen Arts Academy will be having an End-of Year Festival and commencement ceremony showcasing student performances and presentations from the Interlochen website starting Wednesday, May 26, through Friday, May 28.
The Festival will feature creative writing, dance, film, music, interdisciplinary arts, theatre, and visual arts. The students have really put their all into this even after having a rough year with Covid. Some of the highlights will include a collaborative performance of Jonathan Dove’s “Figures in the Garden” produced and performed by music, dance, and film students; a fully staged production of the classic ballet Swan Lake; original songs performed by singer-songwriting students; performances by the Arts Academy Orchestra, Choir, and jazz ensembles; readings by creative writing stu

For decades, violinist Paul Sonner has gotten up at 3 a.m. to practice his instrument for several hours before his day of teaching at Interlochen Arts Academy begins.
He practices for several hours each night after he gets home, too. That s how you get to be a teacher at Interlochen and the concertmaster of two orchestras, he says.
Sonner is retiring from his job as instructor of violin at Interlochen this month, a role he s held for over 20 years.
He plans to maintain his roles as concertmaster of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra and the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, but just as long as I can be a leader and play my parts well.

This year s Interlochen Arts Academy students have just completed a year like no other.
From their arrival on campus back in August to the end of the school year, they maintained rigorous masking and distancing all while attending classes and making art and music.
This Academy year draws to a close with the traditional Interlochen Arts Academy Festival, featuring performances and presentations from students in all arts areas.
Like most events in the past year, Festival will look and feel a little different. Student performances are closed to the public but can be enjoyed live on Classical IPR.
