Order books now open: Volkswagen s electric ID 4 to go on sale in these markets

Volkswagen has opened the order books for its new ID.4 electric SUV. Well, in Europe and other EV-ready markets, at least. Available in Life, Family, and Max specifications, the new electric vehicle (EV) has a starting price of £41 570, which equates to around R831 000 on the current exchange rate, excluding the various taxes and costs. According to Volkswagen, the ID.4 Life has a maximum electric range of up to 520km, with the Family and Max variants boasting 512km and 505km, respectively. Whichever model you opt for, the 500km range should curb any range anxiety you might experience. All three specifications can regain up to 320km of range from a 125kW rapid charger in 30 minutes, while a 7.2kW home charger takes around 11 hours to take the ID.4 from 0-100%. Charging to 80% from a DC, CCS charge point takes 38min.

VW s Augmented Reality Head-Up Display Tech Is Properly Futuristic

Volkswagen has become the first volume carmaker to offer an augmented reality head-up display system for the compact segment, through its ID.3 and ID.4 fully-electric models. The system is able to superimpose certain symbols onto the outside world and display them on the windshield in a dynamic fashion. Usually, this type of system would first end up on high-end models exclusively – just ask Mercedes. “We have introduced a genuine innovation in series production,” says Frank Welsch, VW development board member. “And we have done this not in a premium vehicle, but in the compact models of the all-electric ID family. Making pioneering technologies available to a large number of customers is a core competency of Volkswagen.”
