Larry Hogan of neighboring Maryland did something extremely important in beginning the long process of unwinding our current political polarization.

Known as the Maryland Citizens Redistricting Commission, the nine-person group will include three Democrats, three Republicans and three independents.

The Florida Department of Health announced 30 new coronavirus-related deaths in Volusia County on Wednesday, the highest the county has seen so far. But FDOH - Volusia spokeswoman Holly Smith said the deaths were from a grouping reported by the Vital Statistics Office. The number reported in today’s report does NOT reflect 30 people who died from COVID yesterday, Smith wrote in an emailed statement. They only reflect 30 COVID-related deaths that have occurred in Volusia County since the pandemic began.
Based on a report by the FDOH, seven deaths actually occurred on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
The second-highest increase in deaths for Volusia County was 14 on Dec. 31. The third-highest was reported on July 15 with 12 deaths.
