The 75-year-old Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief s samples were sent to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh, for testing on Saturday. Dhaka: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday (April 12), a year after she was released from jail temporarily amid the pandemic, according to media reports.  The 75-year-old Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief s samples were sent to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, for testing on Saturday, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper quoted Public Relations Officer, Health Ministry, Maidul Islam Prodhan as saying.

Representative image BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government on Monday asked hospitals, both government and private, to avoid non-essential hospitalizations and defer elective surgeries in view of second wave of Covid infections. A fresh set of guidelines issued by the state issued by the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) asked the hospitals to stop all elective surgeries while take up emergency surgeries with universal precaution. Amid rising Covid infections, the government asked the hospitals to suspend central registration of patients, to avoid crowds in queue, for OPD care. Instead, it asked them to do manual registration by maintaining social distancing. The government move came on a day the state witnessed 1,741 new infections and two deaths. The state has been reporting more than 1,000 new cases per day for past four days. The state now has 9,259 active cases.

Express News Service THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government gave permission to organise a slew of festivals including Thrissur Pooram  ahead of the assembly polls eyeing votes without taking note of the possible rise in Covid cases after the elections.  Interestingly, the decision has resulted in Sree Koodalmanikyam temple in Irinjalakuda organising last year’s cancelled 11-day festival and this year’s festival in less than a month. With the pandemic situation changing and test positivity rate rising, health officials have warned that if these festivals are organised without adhering to the protocol, the state would witness a sharp surge in cases. A senior officer at the Directorate of Health Services, on condition of anonymity, said, “The administrative permission for festivals like Thrissur Pooram was given without even asking the medical reports or assessing the ground realities.
