LANSING, Mich. The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) will reinstate work search requirements for unemployment benefit claimants starting May 30, 2021. The work search requirement was suspended in March 2020 to help the increased volume of hardworking Michiganders facing unemployment due to the pandemic.
To remain eligible for benefits, claimants must actively seek work and report at least one work search activity for each week they claim benefits. A work search activity could include:
Submitting a job application.
Applying for the new Clean Slate program
Participating in reemployment services through Michigan Works! or creating an account on job search sites such as MiTalent.org.

Michigan Department of Attorney General
LANSING – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency are letting individuals know of important tax documents for people who may be victims of identity theft as a result of widespread fraudulent unemployment claims in 2020.
With tax season underway, the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) has begun issuing 1099-G tax forms to all claimants who received unemployment benefits. If someone receives a UIA 1099 form but did not receive unemployment benefits, that person is likely a victim of identity theft and should report it immediately. The envelope containing the 1099 form from the UIA will include instructions on what should be done by victims of identity theft. Please follow those instructions closely.
Residents who get tax form for unemployment but no benefits may be victims of identity theft
By Jack Nissen
LANSING, Mich. - Tax season has arrived, which means Michigan s unemployment agency is issuing relevant forms that beneficiaries will need to fill out when they file their annual income.
However, if someone receives a 1099-G form from the UIA but never received benefits, it likely means they ve been the victim of fraud.
In a year where conditions for fraud widened amid a frenzy of unemployment filings, it s likely the rate of scamming ballooned in response. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the employment status of many Michiganders and allowed scammers to find new ways to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals, Attorney General Dana Nessel said. I urge anyone who may be a victim of identity theft to take action and report it immediately. This is also a good time to remind everyone to be cautious about sharing your personal and financial information
