The clearance of Kranji woodland has sparked intense discussions over the balance between conservation and development.
This comes after the recent public debates over Dover forest and Clementi forest, which have caused Singaporeans to be concerned about the loss of green spaces that have rich biodiversity and important ecological functions.
Kranji woodland cleared by mistake
The forested land at Kranji Road/Close, with the old rail corridor running through, was among plots of land earmarked for the development of the Agri-Food Innovation Park (AFIP).
JTC said on Feb. 16 that the contractor had erroneously cleared parts of the 70-hectare woodland and the agency is investigating what had led to this mistake and determining if the company should be penalised further.

SINGAPORE: The error in clearing parts of the Kranji woodland area could undermine recent efforts by Singapore authorities to better engage nature groups, said conservation advocates who expressed shock and disappointment at the mistake.
The 70ha Kranji woodland area, about the size of Jurong Lake Gardens, is along a green artery known as the Rail Corridor.

Land along Rail Corridor was cleared before environmental assessments were completed
Aerial photos of Kranji woodland taken in May 2019 and this month. The photo taken this month shows a narrow strip of trees near the Rail Corridor, with much of the rest cleared. Beginning at the end of last December, green patches were cleared on the site, which is slated for the Agri-Food Innovation Park - part of Sungei Kadut Eco-District. On discovering the mistake during a site inspection on Jan 13, JTC Corporation instructed its contractor, Huationg, to stop all clearing work immediately. No further clearing has taken place at the site since then.PHOTOS: COURTESY OF BRICE LI
