Salvation Army hosts vacation Bible school

WBBJ TV July 19, 2021 Monday night was the first night for the VBS. Kids got a chance to learn about the everyday experience of law enforcement officers and firefighters. Commanding Officer for the Salvation Army in Jackson, Lt. Mark Cancia, says this is a great way for the kids to learn about the importance of Christ and the safety of the community. “A lot of times we connect with these first responders when there is an emergency or a crisis in our community,” Cancia said. “But if we take a more proactive approach, and we engage with them during vacation Bible school, we think some of those interactions will be safer, nicer and just establish a better community.”

Youth group learns military history during tour of VFW Post 6496

WBBJ TV July 15, 2021 JACKSON, Tenn. Thursday, youth from the Salvation Army of Jackson took a tour of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6496. The post hosted a war memorabilia tour, giving kids the opportunity to learn about wars from veterans themselves. Veterans like Cmdr. Thomas Buck say it’s vital for youth to learn this history, especially when there are those alive to tell it. “It’s one thing to read it. It’s another thing to come look at these walls that are in here, and then actually talk to a veteran that can explain it,” Buck said. Buck is a Vietnam War veteran, and he says teaching the kids about history is a way for him to decompress and combat PTSD.

(AP) The leader of the Salvation Army of Jackson is moving to a new post with the organization in Alabama. Major Robert Lyle is leaving Mississippi to serve as an area commander for the charity organization’s Birmingham, Alabama branch, WAPT-TV reported. Lyle had been with the Salvation Army of Jackson for three years. The Jackson City Council on Tuesday passed a resolution honoring him, with several council members heralding him for helping out during the city’s recent water crisis, the coronavirus pandemic, and assisting people with disabilities.

Salvation Army Hosting Food Bank Challenge

Jackson County, MI- 13.5% of families are food insecure. In fact, last year over 18,000 individuals received help from our food assistance programs and emergency pantry. The Salvation Army receives a large portion of our food from the Food Bank of South-Central Michigan. The Food Bank is part of Feeding America and the Food Bank Council of Michigan. The Salvation Army of Jackson County is asking for your support in meeting the annual Food Bank Challenge. From April 1st – May 30th, every donation made to our agency’s account- J2040- at the Food Bank, will receive an additional 10%. Your $25 gift, plus the 10% match, will result in our pantry receiving a minimum of $240 worth of food at wholesale prices.
