Photos courtesy of Cheryl Poulopoulos Blanche Chavarry, a retired major of The Salvation Army who dedicated her life to its ministry and community, died Wednesday after a brief illness. She was 96. Chavarry, of Old Orchard Beach, was a volunteer at The Salvation Army’s Seaside Pavilion for nearly 20 years. She was remembered Thursday as a kind and resilient woman who made a good pot of coffee and wasn’t afraid to say what was on her mind. “She was a real pistol, I’ll tell ya,” said Cheryl Poulopoulos, director of the Seaside Pavilion. “She lived a very full life. You don’t get to be 96 without being a little bit stubborn. She knew what she wanted. She had a really strong faith in God.”

(WAFF) - Overnight shelters and warming stations across Madison County are once again taking care of a lot of people this week. Employees at the Huntsville Downtown Rescue Mission opened the doors to the cafeteria at 5 pm, February 17th. The CEO Keith Overholt says, more than 300 people are spending the night and they provide more than 1000 meals a day. The Downtown Rescue Mission is not the only organization offering a helping hand.

Salvation Army accommodates increase in people seeking shelter during winter weather

WNKY 40 News February 16, 2021 BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- With the dropping temperatures and icy storms, homeless shelters are scrambling to accommodate the rising number of people seeking a sanctuary.  “We had a man call us yesterday who said he’s been sleeping in his car for two months. which is acceptable if you can deal with it. But he said he’s just getting too cold,” said Salvation Army Corps Officer Major Richard Watts.  The Salvation Army in downtown Bowling Green sees a steady stream of people during winter but this year it’s complicated to accommodate all of them with COVID-19 restrictions.
