Wellsville prepares for Madison St bridge work

WELLSVILLE The Village of Wellsville is preparing for a major bridge replacement project set for this summer.  The arched Madison Street bridge over the Western NY & Pennsylvania Railroad will be torn down and replaced during the construction season. Allegany County first approved design work for the new bridge in 2018 and the project is coming to fruition this year.  Village DPW Superintendent Bill Whitfield said the county is expected to award the bid for construction work this spring in March or April. The county has estimated the project will cost just over $2.5 million.  Sometime this summer Madison Street will close and remain closed until the project is completed, said Whitfield, who estimated the project will take 12-18 months. They have a considerable amount of work to do there.

Bells go silent for town s Red Kettle drive, but community digs deep

Wicked Local The success of the Salvation Army s Red Kettle Drive has been a given for years now. Organized annually by the Wellesley Kiwanis Club, the drive brought together community members of all ages to ring the bell outside Roche Bros. Customers would drop their coins, bills or checks into a red kettle, and volunteers would take the money to the bank to be counted and deposited. The contributions were used to help those in need, but part of the joy of this annual event was the chance to chat with friends and neighbors donating their time, often while standing out in bitter cold temperatures. Whole families, Town Hall employees, Wellesley Key Club members, and even pets showed up for a shift or two.
