Government panel aims to save Twin-Cities homeless from freezing in the cold

BLOOMINGTON (WEEK) - Lives are at risk for McLean County s homeless as they face dangerously cold temperatures and fewer places to go because of COVID-19. McLean County government leaders are extending a helping hand. The county board s executive committee on Monday voted unanimously to recommend shifting tens of thousand of dollars initially intended to aid struggling small businesses and instead use those dollars for the PATH Crisis Center to house the homeless in local hotels and motels. PATH Executive Director Karen Zangerle said at the end of January, the agency counted 27 people in the Twin-Cities sleeping on the street. The organization could usually count on placing many of its clients at the Salvation Army s Safe Harbor Shelter, but there s been a COVID outbreak there, said Zangerle.
